I used to wonder what was going on in the minds of Germans during the killing of six-million Jews. What was the moral malaise that clouded their recognition of the evil being done in their name? Now I know.
History has done a turnabout on us. The evils of Naziism which we have condemned since World War II have crept in through our own back door (their usual point of entry). At the command of a President selected by a simple majority of five, our storm-troopers prepare to inflict "shock and awe" upon a Baghdad that poses no threat. Our former allies stare at the scene like the tortured faces looking on the battle in Picasso's "Guernica," dumbfounded. We may soon discover that Germans, French and Italians (and not just dispossessed Arabs) plot our downfall, with formidable weapons. After the dust clears, we will see that we have stood in the fascists' black boots.
Throw me in jail, Mr. Bush.
